HOME RULE
'
'What's a Referendum,
Mum?' "Um ------- Darlings,
let me see --
Luckily Australians live in a Democracy,
Time passes and life changes and maybe some old law
Doesn't quite suit circumstances as it did before,
So all the people get to vote --- should that law go or stay?
And as you grow up you'll keep that right --- to always have your say."
The children huddled in a group where scraps of conversation
Indicated serious discussion of my proffered explanation.
'Mum ----- ', our eldest tugged my sleeve,
I smiled fondly, said
"Yes,
dear?"
'We think Referendums and Democracy a very good idea,
We set up our own polling booth, have voted and agree
No more homework, no more chores,
and no more broccoli! '
"All votes annulled!", I hugged them all,
"Yes , you can ask Dad later."
A little voice came floating down the hall, 'But,
Dad ---- what is a
Dictator?!!'
