SHOVELLIN' SAND
There's an ache between my shoulders and blisters on my hand
Shovellin', shovellin' ,
shovellin' sand,
The river keeps on rising and it's taken all my land,
Shovellin', shovellin',
shovellin' sand.
The rain came in October,
falling steady day and night,
Every gully roared and thundered down the mountains above
Bright,
The raging,
swollen Ovens raced right through the little town,
Swirled and spread at Myrtleford,
tore trees and fences down.
Cattle struggle weakly, swept against the cruel barbed strand,
Shovellin', shovellin',
shovellin' sand.
There are tears mixed with my sweat now,
shaking legs will barely stand,
Shovellin', shovellin',
shovellin' sand.
In Whorouly and in Milawa the flow is menacing,
And westward there's a warning for Black Range Creek and
River King,
Houses stand abandoned,
Wangaratta waits with dread,
Desperation our companion through the fearful hours ahead.
Valleys washed away at Edi, empty space where bridges spanned,
Shovellin', shovellin',
shovellin' sand,
We need sandbags on the levee, volunteers to lend a hand,
Shovellin', shovellin',
shovellin' sand.
Broken River at Benalla divides the town in two
Homes and roads go under as relentless floods surge
through,
And the lovely River Goulburn I've seen smiling in the sun
Has engulfed and claimed whole orchards and laid seige
to Shepparton.
Stranded sheep stare dumbly - how can poor beasts understand?
Shovellin', shovellin',
shovellin' sand,
Flood boats wait on standby, the pressure pumps are manned,
Shovellin', shovellin',
shovellin' sand.
Old Man Murray is expected to peak at record height,
Frantic workers at Moama and Echuca join the fight,
Sandbags,
spades and gumboots - we rally to the call
Threatened by the murky waters creeping slowly up the
wall.
Mud and sludge subsiding, devastation on the land,
Shovellin', shovellin',
shovellin' sand,
But tales of love and courage can be heard on every hand,
Shovellin', shovellin',
shovellin sand.
