SHARE THE DREAMS
Jaws masticating lollies and chips, mindlessly thumbing Nintendo,
Glued to the world of a flickering screen,
deaf to all but it's screaming
crescendo,
It's school holiday time, I remember the joy as the classroom doors closed
and we scattered,
Life on the farm and the call of the bush held all the enchantment that
mattered.
We didn't moan 'but there's nothing to do',
knew not what 'bored out of
our brain' meant,
Our days were too full and ended too soon - we made our own
entertainment,
Barefoot and carefree we ran on the hills,
there were gullies and creeks to
explore,
Used our young muscle to work with a will,
somehow finding fun in each
chore.
Songs in the kitchen, old stories re-told,
the warmth and the love and the
sharing,
Always someone to listen, praise or chastise,
the comfort of somebody's
caring,
I pity these youngsters slouching dull eyed,
tossing coke cans beneath
passing cars
In a tinsel world wearing a plastic veneer - never once seeing the stars,
And I pity us, too, for somewhere on the way,
generations have drifted
apart,
Surely the dreams that we all once knew could be shared with an unbiased
heart.
