CARRYING A TORCH FOR WANGARATTA
We've seen them trotting round the back streets,
perspiration
shining faces,
Doing push - ups, power walking, showing off their paces,
Intensive training's all the go - life hasn't been the same
Since they heard they were to carry the Year 2000 Flame.
There are farmers wearing gumboots jogging a la Cliffy Young,
Wheelchairs being overhauled so nothing will go bung,
Students counting down the hours as they practise baton swaps,
Teachers stripping stocks of liniment and band-aids from the shops!
An extra special moment in front of a home crowd
For a golden medal cyclist - he's already 'done us proud',
Folk from every walk of life, retirees and housewives,
Sharing an experience they'll remember all their lives.
A lass from the police force, a local pharmacist,
A masseur, a paramedic - the people on this list
Will bear the beacon for us all, for all the world to see
This demonstration of our pride in our community.
Hand to hand around Australia, our citizens will show
A smiling spirit of goodwill, a sense of 'a fair go',
They'll hold the Torch up highly, honoured to be there as
Wangaratta's chosen team of Olympic Games Torchbearers.
