REGARDS TO RABBITS
We dogged 'em an' we trapped 'em, an' we dug the blighters out,
We shot 'em an' we snared 'em,
an' we fenced them in ( or out! )
Waged war on them with shotguns and spotlights every night,
Ploughed their burrows, ripped 'em,
blew them up with dynamite,
We searched out active warrens and spent long afternoons
Filling deepest diggings with deadly poison fumes,
We skun 'em, stretched their furry pelts,
ate 'em baked or fried,
They laughed at us, kicked up their heels,
went forth and multiplied!
We whacked 'em with shillelaghs an' destroyed their habitats
Boiled 'em up for dogs or pigs or made Akubra hats,
We Ten Eighty'd an' we ferretted - they were still on the increase,
We infected 'em with myxo via mossie bites and fleas,
They recovered an' they rallied an' without a hesitation,
Set to work enthusiastically restoring population,
Now the scientists are smugly sure this new virus Caleci's
Gonna wipe out all the rabbits and exterminate the species.
But me? I'm not convinced we've won, not ready to believe
This soft and cuddly rodent hasn't something up it's sleeve,
If the famous Tassie Tiger'd had the same will to survive
He wouldn't be extinct today, but very much alive,
These little blokes have proved they're tough,
not easily put down,
I've a feeling they'll be back again to fight another round,
So don't rest on your laurels thinkin' you've got bunnies beat,
In the distance hear the thumping of hordes of eager feet!
