HIGH COUNTRY HOSTAGE

We  have  taken  of  her  life-blood  -

                                        Hear  her  sad  soul  crying

for  the  days  of  strength  and  beauty

When  her  proud  heart  sang  full  song,

        Slow  murmur  over  stagnant  pools

                                laments  her  tortured  dying,

                                             Kingfisher  flash,   shy  platypus,

Swift  leaping  fish  - - -  all  gone.

        The  far  Tasman  sobs  entreaty,

                                         Parched  wattle  vainly   trying

                                                               to  pay  a  golden ransom

For  the  captive  held  too  long,

        Release  her  tear-bright  waters,

                                         Set  her  healing  spirit  flowing,

                                               Restore  the  Snowy  River

        Let  our  heritage  live  on.
